Make of the week: iris top crochet by Lucy in Devon SUn Yarns sock club handdyed yarn

Make of the Week , 27/10/17.

I have followed Lucy for many years, and used to enjoy her cooking blog and more recently her crochet makes.  Lucy has a real eye for making beautiful crochet items, and they always seem the perfect balance of useful and beautiful! When she used a skein of yarn from Sock Club to make some beautiful tops for her daughter I wanted to share them to inspire others. Lucy has kindly shared some photos here and some words of her own to describe her project.

Maker: Lucy Stableford-Grieve

Pattern:  The ‘Iris Top’ pattern by Kinga Erdem on Ravelry here.

Yarn: Sprightly sock yarn, from the Sock Club

My name is Lucy. After convincing myself that I was not a creative person for most of my life, I taught myself to crochet five years ago, using YouTube videos. I am left-handed but crochet right-handed because I didn’t know there was any other way! I started selling as The Pie Patch a year later and still can’t quite believe I am actually doing it. It’s immensely satisfying.

I’ve had the pattern put by for ages. My youngest daughter is named Iris, so I simply had to make it for her. In fact, the Devon sun yarn Sprightly  was so perfect that I ended up making two!

I occasionally adapt patterns or design my own items but I feel much more comfortable following someone else’s pattern. This was a lovely straight-forward pattern, worked top-down from the yoke. They didn’t take long at all – grabbing a few minutes here & there over perhaps a week or so during the summer holidays, fitting it in around my children & days out.

Picking the buttons was the hardest part! I have made this style of top or dress lots of times before but I rarely have time to make things for myself or my family. The quieter summer months are when I dive into indulgent projects & recharge my creative batteries.
